On a fishing trip to the Mud Hole 18 Nautical miles east south east of Point Judith on Monday September 24th with Lure builder Don "Bliz" Blizard and Rhode Island Chef Ralph Baptista we got into the Tuna Bite.
Leaving the dock from Pt. Judith at 5:45 a.m. we headed out of the break wall with flat calm seas under our boat. The ride in my old Grady white was terrific arriving at the Mud hole at 6:30. After spotting some draggers working and a bunch of boats already set up on the chunk, we set up a spread to troll. The spread was 1 bliz simulator on an outside line and 3 Atlantic Offshore Tuna Heads on the other outside and in the corner and on the flat line just inside the white water. On the other corner we had a cedar bullet.
Not more than five minutes into the troll, while setting out the 3rd line, the cedar plug goes off and we had a quick fight for a 30" Bluefin Tuna. We bleed and iced him quickly and reset the spread. For the next two and a half hours we were keeping stead action on Green Bonito and one more Bluefin.
After the troll bite slowed we started chunking some butter fish and were able to land one more Green Bonito and had a couple nice run-offs that didn't land.
A beautiful day on the water. And as of today the bite is sustained on the south shore of Rhode Island. Stay Tunes for further reports from offshore.
